Jeffrey Magee, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Division of Hematology-Oncology, Department of Pediatrics

Dr. Magee studies the genes that regulate self-renewal in blood forming stem cells and leukemia cells. Self-renewal is the process through which cells divide extensively without committing to a specific fate. In normal physiology, self-renewal allows stem cells to persist throughout life and regenerate all blood lineages. Leukemia cells often co-opt stem cell self-renewal mechanisms to drive their neoplastic growth. The Magee lab is interested in understanding how self-renewal mechanisms are hijacked by leukemia cells and how these mechanisms change with age. Dr. Magee has shown that certain mutations only cause leukemia during specific windows of development. The process of leukemia formation is therefore intimately tied to the developmental biology of blood forming stem cells. His studies are important because they explain why the biological properties of childhood and adult leukemias differ considerably. Dr. Magee’s ultimate goal is to identify age-specific mechanisms of leukemia formation that can be targeted to yield precise and effective therapies.

Dr. Magee earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He then received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Washington University. He trained as a resident and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology fellow at the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, he began post-doctoral training in Sean Morrison’s lab. He then moved with the lab to UT-Southwestern in 2010. Dr. Magee just recently returned to Washington University to start his own laboratory, and he is thrilled to be back.

Dr. Magee lives in Webster Groves with his wife and four children: Erica (9), Alex (6), Patrick (3) and Charlotte (3 mo).
