Work in our lab focuses on disorders of the developing childhood gut and employs metagenomics, virology, and epidemiology to begin to define the stool virome in health and disease. Viral diversity of the gut is vast and largely unknown. We aim to determine its role in health and disease.
We use next generation sequencing to interrogate clinical specimens from healthy and diseased children to define the viruses present. This method allows us to find both known and novel viruses in samples. Using these methods we have discovered novel astroviruses (MLB2, MLB3, VA2, VA3, and VA4) as well as novel picornaviruses (klassevirus and cosavirus E-1).
