Joseph "Bo" Koster

jkoster@cellbiology.wustl.edu

Bo's previous accomplishments in the Hruz lab include the characterization of acute effects of HIV protease inhbitors on glucose stimulated insulin secretion.  He is currently using several genetically modified mouse strains to further elucidate the molecular mechanisms responsible for PI-induced alterations in glucose homeostasis.

Rich Hresko

hresko_r@kids.wustl.edu

Rich is investigating structure/function relationships in GLUT1 and GLUT4.  He is utilizing state-of-the-art methodologies to perform solution-state structural analyses.  A major focus of his current work is to identify and characterize GLUT4 interacting proteins that may regulate the activity and/or cellular trafficking of glucose transporters.

Anatoly Tzekov

Tzekov_A@kids.wustl.edu

In addition to assisting many of the new investigators in the laboratory, Anatoly is studying the role of GLUT4 mediated glucose transport on adipocyte function.  He is currently using the recently developed OP9 adipocyte model system to understand cellular pertubations induced by pharmacologic glucose transport blockade.

Arpita Vyas

Vyas_A@kids.wustl.edu

Arpita is a senior clinical fellow in our pediatric endocrinology and diabetes program.  She has developed an interest in studying the effects of glucose transport on cardiac function in the setting of ischemic injury and heart failure.  An emerging area of investigation includes the role of micronutrient deficiency on myocardial glucose transport and contractility.

Stephanie Scherer

Stephanie is a first-year graduate student in the biochemistry program.  Stephanie is developing a project focused on expressing GLUT4 interacting proteins to determine whether she can alter the cellular distribution and/or functional activity of GLUT4

Dennis Woo

dmwoo@artsci.wustl.edu

Dennis is an undergraduate student majoring in biology and education at Washington University.  Dennis joined the Hruz laboratory this past summer to gain experience in biomedical research where he assisted the laboratory by performing a number of commonly performed assays including measurement of 2-deoxyglucose uptake, molecular cloning, and pcr analysis.  He is continuing to work part-time in the laboratory in addition to his undergraduate studies.
