Spinella Lab

Dr. Philip C. Spinella, MD, FCCM, leads the Translational Research Program (TRP) and the Blood Research Program (BRP) in the Division of Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine (WUSM) and St Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH).

The TRP organizes all translational research within the Division to improve the efficiency and quality of all projects. The TRP also supports research project development and grant application submissions via education and oversight.

The BRP focuses on critical illness related pathophysiology of blood cells and proteins during critical illness, in addition to the efficacy and safety of blood products.

Current studies include examining how critical illness effects RBC physiology and research that details how critical illness affects coagulation, inflammation and endothelial function in children.

The BRP is performing trials and developing others that aim to determine the efficacy and safety of blood products to include RBCs, plasma, platelets, and whole blood.  Blood conservation research is also a priority for the BRP.
