We use mouse models to study cellular differentiation, organ development, and oncogenesis. Below are some accomplishments of our laboratory:

  • We reported the cloning and characterization of transcription factor GATA4 (cited over 600 times).
  • We provided early evidence that GATA factors are key regulators of cardiac, endoderm, and gonadal development.
  • We championed the use of an overlooked model -- gonadectomy-induced adrenocortical metaplasia -- for the study of steroidogenic cell differentiation.
  • We reported that mutations of Gata4 cause congenital diaphragmatic hernias and primary lung defects in the mouse; other investigators subsequently showed that GATA4 mutations were a rare cause of diaphragmatic hernias in humans.
